Dakota Wood Box Beams are reclaimed Douglas fir. The wood came from a church that was disassembled in South Dakota. It was originally the floor joist in the church supporting the main level floor. This wood was shipped by rail in the early 1900s to this region.
Douglas fir is not native to this area. It grew in the northwest Oregon or Washington State.
Note: All our box beams are made from authentic reclaimed wood. All are unique and may contain nail holes, distress marks, checking, or peg holes. Each beam will have an individual look due to warp, twist, wane and inconsistency of material thickness. This adds to the realism and character of authentic reclaimed wood. Due to the irregularities in reclaimed timbers, the inner dimensions of the box beams will vary. Please be very careful when cutting through these beams. There could be nails and/or screws buried below the surface. Use caution! Barron Designs is not responsible for any bodily harm or damage to your equipment.

* Anything over 12 feet may have a scarf joint
All material is authentic reclaimed lumber from turn of the century buildings located in the Midwest. By using reclaimed lumber, we conserve our natural resources and preserve a piece of American History. All material is hand selected and made with close attention to details. The wood comes from barns, grain buildings and warehouses. The majority of the wood comes in lengths from 14' to 16'. Occasionally it will reach lengths in excess of 20' but this is extremely rare. The minimum width of the wood is 7 3/4" and comes as wide as 11 3/4". Any widths wider will require a splice joint. Every attempt will be made to conceal the joint by hand distressing and wood texture matching. Being authentic material, its actual thickness will vary on each piece from 1 3/4 " to 2 1/4". All surfaces will be rough saw and have beautiful patina and interesting character marks. These marks will create each piece to have a unique look. Nail holes, peg and post holes, worm holes, cracks and other distress marks will be present in all sides. Due to its authenticity, lengths over 12' may require a scarf joint. Our goal is to make these scarf joints look as authentic as possible. They are part of the interesting story behind the wood itself. Scarf joints were used to join timber so they would span the entire length of these majestic buildings of the past. |
